Player Spotlight: Chris Eick
He's been the alternate captain on the Dragons since 2004. He's led the team in goals and points on multiple occasions. He spends more time playing superman than hockey. And he's been known to block shots with his face, despite never wearing a visor. He is a hero. A legend. And a sarcastic asshole. And now, Dragons Hockey is proud to present its innaugural Player Spotlight feature on Chris Eick.
Chris Eick
For what do we know about Chris Eick? He's been friends with Jer and Chris Haas for more than a decade. But what makes Chris Eick, Chris Eick? Dragons Hockey had a sit-down session with Mr. Eick to discuss some of the finer details of his career.
Dragons Hockey: Thanks for joining us today, Chris. Welcome to the Spotlight.
Chris Eick: Good to be here.
DH: When did you start playing roller hockey?
CE: I started playing in the summer of 2004, a few months before chaas put the team together.
DH: Wow. Out of the pan and into the fire, huh?
CE: Yeah, pretty much. I mean we played a couple times in the free skates, because chaas had taken a few years off from playing and we all needed it.
DH: So when you all came together, what was the core team like?
CE: It was me, chaas, Jer, Plourde, and I think Bob Harris was playing at the time. They found a bunch of other players and we started playing in the summer.
DH: I understand there was a situation with jersey numbers before the first game.
CE: Yeah, well I was going to be number 14, and chaas had always been number 14. But his jersey had number 41 on it already, and I basically told him I was going to be number 14 or I was not going to play on the Dragons. So he folded like a house of cards.
DH: Sounds outstanding. So tell us about some of your exploits on the Dragons.
CE: Well I don't like to brag, but ... There were a couple seasons where I was the center of several almost-fights between the Dragons and the Predators, back in 2005 and 2006. Those were some fun seasons. I was ready to get punched every time we played them, and it was pretty much the greatest thing ever.
Coach Eick
DH: That wasn't the only time you found yourself in that position.
CE: No, there were other times. There was this short little mexican [expletive] named [sic] who played on our team for one season. Chaas really didn't like him, so he kicked him off the team. Selfish player, really never brought anything to the table. Well, Jer had injured his ankle and had just come back from being sidelined. Manny kicked his ankle out and re-injured it, so I dove at his knees later in the game. It was pretty blatant, I should have been thrown out of the game for intent to injure.
DH: That bad?
CE: Everyone on the team was pissed. Literally every one of us took a run at him that day. Even chaas leveled him. ... That part might be inaccurate. But the fire was there, and since that game we've all hated him.
DH: Makes sense. Since we're on the subject, how many fights have you been involved with?
CE: Just one. With chaas. I think it might have been just before the game started, or at the end of a period break. We were talking shit to each other and the timing seemed right.
DH: Who won?
CE: I did.
DH: Tell us about the season you took home the MVP trophy
CE: That was a great season. We had six forwards and four defensemen on the team, and Dan Sisson was in net so that made up for us being stacked. I think that was the season chaas finished fourth in points, and then he couldn't score to save his life in the playoffs. But that's ok, the Dragons climbed on my back and I led the way in points. We tried to "modify" the trophy, but it didn't work.
DH: Well thanks for talking with us today. I'm glad you could take the time out of your busy schedule to show up and give us this interview.
CE: Hey no problem. Thanks for having me.
