Dragons win two in a row

The Dragons have played four games this season, and have won the last two.  It is their first legitimate winning streak since joining the E2 division.

The Dragons played Tapeworm on Saturday January 14, and won the game 3-2 in regulation.  Rookie Ryan Hannifan scored the game-tying goal in the third period, and late in the third he set up Don Ouellette for the game winner.  Chris Eick scored the first goal of the game.

On January 21, the Dragons welcomed the return of Al Rice, and defeated the Stingers 6-5 in overtime.  Chris Eick had a pair of goals and Bryan Fogle scored a hat trick including the game-winning tally.  Nick Cote was the other goal-scorer.  The game was a comeback victory as the Dragons were down 5-2 at one point in the game.

Unfortunately the team learned that key forward Al Rice would miss the remainder of the regular season due to a broken wrist suffered during the game.

The Dragons play the Benchwarmers Saturday January 28 at 4pm.

Dragons welcome new player with loss

The Dragons continued the season with another mediocre showing from the forwards, dropping their second consecutive game. Don Ouellette scored the lone goal, an unassisted shot from the blue line midway through the first period.

That was the only bright spot for the team on the night. The Looney Tunes scored seven times. The Dragons managed just 23 shots on goal, bringing the season total to 44. Goaltender Mike Kraemer has faced 61 in two games.

“Aside from totally embarassing ourselves, the forwards did fine I guess,” captain Chris Haas said of the effort. “I mean we keep on getting just over 20 shots a game, Mikey’s stopping more than we’re shooting. Not only that but we’ve been missing three of our fastest guys, we’re too slow to get back and help out on defense. It’s a bad situation, and we’re still working on a fix.”

Kraemer agreed that the forwards were struggling, but he thought the issue was more consistency than skill. “The same three or four guys play defense with each other all the time, and the forwards don’t have that because we don’t have the same four to six forwards every single game.”

Chaas was hopeful for the next game. “Eick’s back, and Al’s gonna try to play too despite his injury. When we have those two, we can play two skill lines no problem. Add Fogle and we can roll three if we have to.”

Here’s hoping the Dragons can get back on track. The team has missed the playoffs three consecutive seasons.

Ryan Hannifan made his debut with the Dragons, skating on the second line with Chaas.

“He played well for his first game.  He’ll only get better as he gets more minutes,” the captain said.

Dragons lose; break for Christmas

The Dragons dropped their season-opener by a score of 4-1. Mike Kraemer stopped 27 of 31, and Nick Cote scored the only goal with an assist from Wayne Despres.

The team took 21 shots, which was a point of concern for Captain Chaas whose goal drought increased to 16 games. “There’s no excuse,” he said. “We need to shoot more.” Al Rice, Chris Eick and Mike Kassey were scratches for the game.

The Dragons had been off for 26 days, and now enter another gameless stretch. Their next game will be Saturday, January 7 at 9pm. The team has activated alternate captain Chris Eick and forward Al Rice for the next game. No status update was given on Mike Kassey.

Video shoot rescheduled

Chaas spoke to Joey Delgado of Memories to Video Production this afternoon, and this evening announced the rescheduled video shoot will take place at the first game of the season, on December 20, 2012. Reaction from the rest of the team was nonexistent as he’s yet to share the news with them. Because chaas is the best captain in the world.

Dragons season over, missed playoffs

The Dragons finished 4-5-1, narrowly missing the playoffs on a tiebreaker. While BOHICA and Jersey Score finished with the same record, the Dragons lost to both teams, finishing 8th in a league of 10 teams.

Dragons captain Chris Haas said the team’s problem was two-fold:

“For starters, we were inconsistent scoring goals. Four of our forwards had fewer than five points. Our highest scoring player had 12 points. Our most consistent guys play defense. Hell, I only had one point this season. You want to point out problems, that’s a big part right there.

“We also had trouble getting people here for all the games. We knew we were going to be short for some of the games. Late in the season, we were making due with two defensemen and three or four forwards. There are ten skaters on the roster. Where were we?”

The good news for the upcoming season is veteran defenseman Jer Haas will be returning to the lineup after recovering from an MCL injury. When asked about his status, he said, “It’s was a little sore, but it feels good to be skating again.”

The new season starts Saturday December 10. Schedules are out Wednesday December 7 on the arena website. Should be available on the dragons-hockey.com schedule page by Thursday night.

Dragons win, extend unbeaten streak to three

The Dragons beat Looney Tunes 5-4 on Saturday. The game featured four unassisted goals by the Dragons and another stand-on-his-head performance from Mike Kraemer.

Chris Eick opened the scoring at 7:29 of the first period. Nine seconds later, Chuck Bennedum added the second goal of the game. But Looney Tunes came back scoring three goals near the end of the first period.

In the second period, Nick Cote fired a snap shot into the net at 8:58. Then Don Ouellette scored at 4:57 off a rebound from Chuck Bennedum. Al Rice had the secondary assist. A few minutes later Looney Tunes tied the game.

The game stayed tied until 3:06 of the third period when Chuck Bennedum notched his third point of the game with another goal.

Al Rice took a tripping penalty at 2:06 of the first period. Dirty player. The Dragons PK killed it off.

Mike Kraemer stopped 26 of 30 shots.

Dragons win by forfeit, get some great news

The Dragons won a game by forfeit on Saturday. Record improves to 2-5-1 with two games to go. Chris Eick continues to lead the team in goals and points, with a bunch. Mike is still the hero between the pipes. Actual stats remain unknown on account of the league website still experiencing issues. This will be an update until such time as it is no longer an issue.

The team got some great news Monday as defenseman Jer Haas has been cleared to skate with the team for next season. He will be warming up with the team for the remaining games, and may take part in several free-skates between now and the new season. We expect to see #4 back in the lineup for the Winter season.

Dragons disapointed, tie Jersey Score

The Dragons managed to tie Jersey Score Tuesday night. Though the team led 4-1 entering the third period, Jersey Score stormed back to tie the game at 5-5. The tying goal was a high shot that struck a defender in front of Mike Kraemer, and dropped under the crossbar with Jersey Score’s net empty.

There were chances on both sides in overtime, but neither team could capitalize before time expired.

The Dragons had plenty of scoring chances during the game. Wayne Despres scored three of the Dragons’ five goals. The other two goals were scored by [sic] and [sic] (yeah that’s right, I don’t remember).

Dragons captain Chris Haas had an outstanding chance in the first period, a breakaway feed from Chris Eick, which led to a shot off the diving goaltender’s helmet.

“I wish it was a better shot,” said Chaas after the game.

“I wish it was a better pass,” answered Eick. The pass was slightly ahead of him.

When asked about the results, Chaas had this to say: “We are really just pro’s at blowing third period leads. The forwards get gassed, and for a while we were running Johno [Alvord] up front with us to try to get some energy going. A couple weird bounces and a tired bench, you know … we’re really struggling to close out a game, and that was a big problem for us last season too. The one good thing is we have Mikey in goal again, and he gives us a chance to win every night.”

The Dragons are off until November 5 at 4pm.

Bad stats

The Dragons coaching staff announced today that Mike Kraemer will be back in net for the forseeable future. Backup netminder Chris Haas struggled in consecutive starts, yielding 17 goals on just 59 shots.

“I’m not a real goalie,” said the captain when asked about his sub-par performance. “If this were 1998 I’d have stopped at least a few of those shots, but it’s 2011 and I haven’t played goalie regularly for more than a decade. Sorry.”

We assume the tongue-in-cheek plague bit him.

In other news, Dragons alternate captains have been tearing up the scoreboard, and the penalty box. In his last two games, Chris Eick has scored 4 goals and an assist, with 4:30 in penalty minutes, bringing his season totals to nine goals and four assists with 7:30 in penalty minutes. Nick Cote has skated in just four games this season and has four goals, two assists, and 4:30 in penalty minutes.

Due to technical difficulties with the league website, official stat updates have been delayed until further notice. No real timeframe on that one. Sort of out of our control.

The Dragons play tonight, so go cheer them on. Or boo. You know. We’re equal opportunity offenders, and we expect the same of our fans.
